Wayward Outpost Day 40 Unlocks & Threats

Marine, Crashed Pilot, special infected, and how to prepare.

Day 40 Guide

Day 40 is the milestone every Wayward Outpost squad watches on the map counter. Servers often begin already near Day 28, so the jump to 40 arrives faster than new players expect. When it hits, two reputation unlocks dominate chat—Marine at about 1,000 reputation and Crashed Pilot at about 10,000 reputation—while Ulcers, Incisors, and Callouses increase pressure near Outpost Alpha and APS. This guide explains what changes, how to prepare, and how to keep logistics alive when home base stops feeling safe. Pair it with Getting Started for day-system basics and the Players Hub and the dedicated Marine guide for class planning.

Update 0.3 note: some special infected and mutation pressure that used to cluster at Day 40 now leans toward ~Day 35, and outbreak feel starts nearer Day 26. Marine and Crashed Pilot remain Day 40 gated—do not expect boats on Day 33 just because mutations already feel late. Details: Update 0.3.

Wayward Outpost is Aerisk’s Roblox military RP zombie logistics PvE shooter on Eleske island. Day 40 does not hand you free gear through promo codes—there are none; see Codes—it raises the stakes on everything you already learned about repairs, convoys, and CBRN discipline.

Reading the day counter

Press M to open the map and day readout (Controls). If you joined mid-wipe on Day 35, you are not “early.” Plan reputation and base defense immediately. If you are on Day 28–32, you still have a short window to finish Bravo footholds, bridge work, and armaments stockpiles before the spike. Announce the day in chat at the start of your session so casual players stop sightseeing in Irueno City while Alpha is under-defended.

What Day 40 changes

Class unlock windows

  • Marine (~1,000 reputation) — The accessible prestige unlock for players who contributed through the twenties and thirties. Marine shifts your role options and is the unlock most squads can realistically target in a dedicated stretch of play. Review Marine context under the Players hub when choosing loadouts and squad gaps.
  • Crashed Pilot (~10,000 reputation) — A much heavier reputation gate. Treat it as a long-term goal, not a same-evening promise for brand-new Infantry. If your hours are limited, secure Marine first, then decide whether Pilot grinding fits your schedule.

Reputation comes from playing the objective game: surviving, supporting logistics, winning fights that matter, and staying with the Guard’s mission on Eleske—not from redeem strings or script shortcuts (Scripts are unrelated and risky).

Special infected near Alpha and APS

Day 40 is associated with nastier spawns—Ulcers, Incisors, and Callouses—concentrating threat around Alpha and APS. That matters because Alpha is your repair womb and APS is a power/logistics pillar. When specials lean on those nodes, careless truck parking and AFK repair stands become lethal. Callouses in particular punish clumps; spread defenders, focus fire, and keep Support ammo on the wire.

After Update 0.3, expect mutation and Tier 3 parasite pressure to show up earlier (~Day 35) while you are still waiting on the Marine day gate. Prep checklists should start in the mid-thirties, not the morning of Day 40.

If your squad planned a glamorous Hellmouth Hive run on Day 40 night, reconsider order of operations: stabilize Alpha/APS first, then spend leftover strength on Hive. A hollow victory in mist means nothing if home base burns.

Preparation checklist (start before Day 40)

  1. Know the day — Check M every respawn cycle; call it out.
  2. Stock armaments at Alpha — Wire defense eats belts; see Logistics.
  3. Finish critical bridges — Engineers need materials before the spike, not during it.
  4. Power and supply APS — Dark APS plus Day 40 spawns is a cascade fail.
  5. Assign wire roles — Who holds north sandbags, who rotates to APS, who drives.
  6. Medic coverage — At least one reliable revive path on Alpha.
  7. Reputation focus — If Marine is close, prioritize productive objectives over empty loot tourism.
  8. Weapon readiness — Secure practical guns via Weapon Locations (M40 overwatch, M60 volume) before the panic.
  9. Vehicle plan — An APC helps escorts, but only if crewed; empty armor on the road is a gift to the horde.
  10. Retreat rules — Agree when to abandon a side op and turtle Alpha.

Marine unlock planning

Hitting ~1k reputation is a teamwork stat as much as a personal one. Play classes the server needs—Engineer, Medic, Support, Radioman—if those fill gaps; selfish lone-wolf routes can be slower and leave you without a base to enjoy Marine inside. When you unlock Marine, re-open Players and the Tier List to slot the class into real compositions instead of treating it as a vanity skin.

Marine does not make you immune to Callouses. It gives you another toolset inside a harder day range. Keep mask habits for CBRN content and keep logistics moving.

Crashed Pilot realism check

~10k reputation is a wall for casual sessions. If a thumbnail promises “instant Pilot codes,” it is lying. Chart a multi-session plan: consistent objective play, avoid needless deaths that waste time, and stay on populated servers where the day progression and missions actually move. If you prefer short hops across servers, remember some projects (like APC parts) redo per server—Pilot grinding favors sticking with a healthy wipe when possible.

Alpha defense on Day 40+

  • Rebuild broken cover before night pressure.
  • Park trucks where they can leave, not where they block firing lanes.
  • Keep a Marksman or M40 on long approaches.
  • Rotate a small team to APS instead of sending everyone and losing Alpha.
  • Call special infected by name so focus fire starts instantly.
  • Use C crouch positions and controlled RMB aim; panic hip-fire wastes the armaments you stockpiled.

APS under pressure

APS runs become military ops. Cargo type confirmed, escort assigned, Engineer riding, extract planned. If Ulcers or Incisors contest the site, clear a perimeter before unloading materials. Do not start Hellmouth while APS is screaming unless you intentionally accept losing island power for a raid attempt—and say that choice out loud.

What not to do on Day 40

  • Ignore the counter until specials are already inside Alpha.
  • Dump all veterans into Hive while recruits hold wire alone.
  • Chase fake Marine codes on phishing sites.
  • Hoard armaments in personal stashes while the sandbags go dry.
  • Start a brand-new APC parts marathon without a defense rotation.
  • Flame players still unlocking basics; point them to the Guides Hub instead.

Sample Day 38–40 timeline

  • Day 35–37: Treat mutation / Tier 3 parasite pressure as live (per Update 0.3); finish bridges and C-Cell banks early.
  • Day 38: Bridge audit, Alpha armaments stockpile, M40/M60 secured.
  • Day 39: APS power confirmed, Medic schedule set, reputation push for near-Marine players.
  • Day 40: Turtle-and-strike—defend Alpha, answer APS alerts, unlock Marine if eligible, only then consider Hive or Pilot grinding.

After you unlock Marine

Spend one life learning the class in a controlled Alpha defense before you solo queue into Irueno City. Help the next wave of players understand Day 40 so the server does not collapse from information gaps. Check Updates after patches in case reputation thresholds or spawn rules shift.

Day 40 is less a cutscene and more a difficulty slider plus unlock gate. Watch the counter, feed the wire, earn Marine through reputation, treat Pilot as a marathon, and keep Eleske’s logistics heart beating when the special infected come home to Alpha and APS.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for Eleske operations.

What unlocks at Day 40 in Wayward Outpost?

Marine unlocks around 1,000 reputation and Crashed Pilot around 10,000 reputation once the server day reaches 40. Check the Players Hub for class context.

What special infected show up around Day 40?

Expect increased Ulcers, Incisors, and Callouses pressure, especially near Outpost Alpha and APS. Tighten defense and focus-fire callouts.

How do I see the current day?

Press M to open the map and day counter. Many servers already start near Day 28, so Day 40 can arrive quickly.

Can I unlock Marine with a code?

No. There are no active promo codes. Reach Day 40 and the reputation requirement through normal play.

Should we still run Hellmouth on Day 40?

Only after Alpha and APS are stable. Day 40 home-base pressure can turn a Hive attempt into a double loss if the wire is undermanned.
