Wayward Outpost Infected Threat Tier List
Priority targets, counters, and why Callouses eat rifle magazines.
Threat ranking for Eleske
Infected in Wayward Outpost are not equal. A loose crowd of Commons drains ammo; a single misplaced step into an Ulcer puddle ends a C-cell run; an Incisor knockdown in a stairwell can cascade into a full squad wipe. This page ranks threat by how badly a type punishes mistakes, then lists counters that match our class tier list. Pair it with Support Roles for ammo uptime and the Marine guide for LAW and grenade answers.

S-tier threats — respect or wipe
Callouses / Brutes
Tanky monsters that shrug off ordinary rifle fire. Dumping M16 magazines into a Callous while Commons flank you is how public lobbies die. Counters: Gustav, M72 LAW, NATIC, and other dedicated explosive/AT tools. Marines who spawn with LAW access or craft LAWs from C-cells at requisition machines are the cleanest answer. Anti-Tank and Grenadier kits also earn their keep here. Medic should pre-position; Engineers should not be on the fence line alone when a Brute pushes Bravo.
Priority rule: If a Callous is on the objective, stop farming Commons and solve the tank first—unless a Screamer is actively pulling an even larger wave onto your backline.
Screamers
Force multipliers. Their call can turn a manageable street into a river of Commons and specials. Killing a Screamer late is worse than killing it early with disciplined marksman or AR fire. Assign one player to audio/visual Screamer duty on every Irueno or Airfield push.
A-tier threats — high punishment, solvable
Incisors
Fast knockdown artists. They punish tunnel vision and tight corridors. A downed teammate eats Medic time and invites Commons to finish the job. Counters: keep spacing, prioritize headshots, and never reload in a doorway without a buddy watching flanks. Automatic Rifleman suppression helps; Medic viral heals recover the aftermath.
Bloaters
On death they spawn worms/parasites that continue the fight. Blindly emptying a magazine into a Bloater at point-blank range is a classic wipe. Counters: Marine M91A under-barrel grenade utility (and Grenadier launchers) delete parasites with less self-damage; backpedal before the pop; finish worms deliberately instead of sprinting through the corpse cloud.
Ulcers
Leave acid puddles that deny ground and shred players who kite poorly. Counters: shoot from outside the pool, mark puddles for the squad, and do not drag truck unload animations into acid. Cleaner-style cleanup fantasy helps after the lane is secure; until then, path around.
B-tier threats — dangerous in numbers
Lurkers
Ambush predators in interiors, stairwells, and low-light props. Alone they are manageable; stacked with Incisors inside PD or hospital geometry they become A-tier. Counters: flashlight/chemlight discipline, pie corners, and ESP-free game sense—learn building layouts from repeated Getting Started style runs rather than rushing every room.
Commons
The baseline infected. Individually weak, collectively the reason Support ammo boxes and Radioman drops exist. Counters: controlled bursts, headshots, grenades for clumps, and never letting them pin your AT player while a Callous approaches. Day 40+ pressure near Alpha/APS raises Common density—budget armaments accordingly.
Tier 3 parasite branches (Update 0.3)
Update 0.3 completes three evolution lines from base parasites into Tier 3 endpoints. Call these by name—generic “parasite” callouts are how grapples wipe backlines.
| Branch | Stages | Threat notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aerial / tendril | Mite → Fly → TendrilFly | TendrilFly’s refreshed model can grapple players out of formation |
| Leech line | Leech → Lurcher → Griever | Lower tiers add screen static style disruption; Griever is the late delete priority |
| Slug line | Slug → Reaver → UltraReaver | Heavy parasite fantasy—soft rifle spam alone is not a plan |
Day 35 mutations (Intestinal, Screecher, Volatile, Benign, and related tweaks) now lean earlier than the old pure Day 40 surprise window, while Marine remains Day 40 gated. Volatile gained a spawn scream; Screamer audio cuts on kill; Benign can gas-aura and—with Bloaters—knock you over / unequip tools in close range. Budget emplacements, LAWs, and spacing accordingly—see Emplacements and Day 40.
Counters: keep buddy spacing against grapples and knockdowns; assign a caller for TendrilFly the same way you assign Screamer duty; bring AT / explosives for UltraReaver-class sponges; do not craft Nest kits assuming pre-0.3 parasite etiquette still holds.
Threat matrix (quick reference)
| Infected | Primary danger | Best answers |
|---|---|---|
| Callouses/Brutes | Armor sponge | Gustav / LAW / NATIC, focus fire |
| Screamers | Aggro multiplier | Early delete, Marksman/AR |
| Incisors | Fast knockdown | Spacing, buddy aid, Medic |
| Bloaters | Death worms | Launcher pop, backpedal |
| Ulcers | Acid denial | Range, pathing, mark puddles |
| Lurkers | Interior ambush | Lights, corners, slow clears |
| Commons | Volume | Ammo economy, grenades |
| TendrilFly (T3) | Grapple yank | Early callout, spacing, focus fire |
| Griever / UltraReaver (T3) | Evolved parasite pressure | Dedicated DPS/AT, no tunnel vision |
Loadout planning by destination
Bravo defense
Expect Commons plus the occasional special on the walls. Engineer upgrades first; Automatic Rifleman and Infantry hold lanes; keep one LAW/Gustav in the cabinet for surprise Brutes. Radioman drops refill the grind.
Irueno / PD C-cell runs
Urban density means Ulcers, Lurkers, and Incisors. Bring Medic, avoid acid while crowbar-looting, and extract by sewer or boat if Marines are online. Stock C-cells for LAWs and IFAKs—see Marine.
Airfield / crash fantasy
Long sightlines favor Marksman, but hangars hide Lurkers. Watch for Day 40 Pilot-area chaos and do not tunnel on loot piles.
Hive / Nest / Hellmouth
Green mist demands CBRN gear from requisition. Special density spikes; Screamers and Brutes punish slow teams. Read Hellmouth / Hive guidance when available, stack Medics, and do not enter without ammo Support.
Class synergies versus infected
- Marine: launcher + LAW toolkit for Bloaters and Brutes; boats for unsafe road skips.
- Medic: Incisor recovery and long Nest sustain.
- Engineer: keeps the safe house intact so wipes are not permanent base loss.
- Radioman + Support: infinite-feeling ammo against Common volume.
- Grenadier / Anti-Tank: specialized delete buttons.
- Marksman: Screamer and approach control.
- CBRN: Hive entry tax.

Discipline checklist before you leave spawn
- Who is carrying AT for Callouses?
- Who is Medic on Incisor duty?
- Do we have a Screamer caller?
- Are CBRN masks crafted if the route kisses the Nest mist?
- Is Radioman on cooldown timer awareness so we are not dry mid-fight?
If any answer is “nobody,” downgrade the objective. Wayward Outpost rewards logistics honesty over hero pushes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Eleske operations.
What kills Callouses and Brutes efficiently?
Use Gustav, M72 LAW, or NATIC-style AT/explosive tools. Ordinary rifle spam wastes armaments and gets your squad flanked by Commons.
How do I handle Bloaters?
Backpedal before the death pop and clear worms with grenade-launcher tools such as the Marine M91A under-barrel instead of standing in the parasite cloud.
Why are Ulcers dangerous if they seem slow?
Their acid puddles deny space during looting and truck unloads. Walking through acid while focused on C-cells is a top cause of failed Irueno runs.
Should I always shoot Commons first?
Clear enough Commons to stay mobile, but prioritize Screamers and Callouses when they appear—those two escalate the whole fight.
Do I need CBRN gear for every infected type?
No. CBRN matters most near Hive green mist. Other infected are solved with pathing, AT tools, Medic support, and ammo logistics.
What are the Update 0.3 Tier 3 parasite branches?
Mite→Fly→TendrilFly, Leech→Lurcher→Griever, and Slug→Reaver→UltraReaver. TendrilFly can grapple players; learn the full notes on Update 0.3 and this page.
